A tour around the house and grounds of Rudyard Kipling's home, Bateman's, in East Sussex. This 17th-century National Trust country house is where the write & poet lived out his final years 🔗    • Historic England

A look around Bateman's, the country home in East Sussex bought by Rudyard Kipling & his wide Caroline in 1902, and was his home until he passed away in 1936, it was bequeathed to the National Trust by Caroline in 1939.

After strolling past the Mulberry Tearoom toward the oast house and garage, we step into Batenman's via the main entrance and strain into the Entrance Hall. Bateman's is not a huge country house, but it very much feels like Rudyard Kipling's home, especially when you wander into the Dining Room with its 18th-century leather wall coverings.

A stroll upstairs takes you to the study, again you feel as if you have wanted into Rudyard's private place. Next is the Exhibition Room which features many interesting artefacts, including a book of Rudyard's poetry, opened at "If-". I needed no other reason, so I decided to recite "If-" whilst we continue through the Scullery Kitchen Bookshop to the courtyard outside.

Our wanderings now take us through Bateman's gardens & grounds, leading us to the Lily Pond, the Quarterdeck and Spring Borders & the Rose Garden before heading on to Park Mill at Bateman's. We take a look around the restored watermill before heading back to the main house.

Strolling around the house, we then enjoy the Mulberry Garden. We complete our tour with the briefest of looks at the Orchard and Vegetable Garden.
