Alcoutim é o concelho que mais a nordeste se situa no Algarve. Longe das multidões e da agitação dos centros turísticos do litoral algarvio, Alcoutim é um paraíso de tranquilidade entre a serra do Caldeirão e o rio Guadiana, fronteira natural com a vizinha Espanha. A região mantém vivo o seu artesanato, eminentemente ligado à vida rural, com peças que vão das tradicionais mantas de lã ou de trapos, à cestaria em cana e vime, olaria, entre muitas outras.
À beira do Rio Guadiana, a história da vila de Alcoutim está muito associada ao facto de se situar no local até onde se fazem sentir as marés, o que obrigava os barcos, que faziam o tráfego dos produtos da região, a aguardar durante horas pelas condições propícias à navegação. No entanto, desde tempos remotos, a sua posição estratégica, de fronteira com a vizinha localidade espanhola de Sanlúcar del Guadiana, exigiu a construção de estruturas de apoio e defesa, das quais permanecem alguns vestígios que se tornaram pontos de interesse a visitar.

Um passeio de alguns minutos leva à descoberta de casas centenárias e de alguns monumentos como a Igreja da Misericórdia e o Castelo, onde está instalado o Núcleo Museológico de Arqueologia, onde se pode ver o maior conjunto de jogos de tabuleiro da época islâmica provenientes de um único sítio arqueológico.

Em Alcoutim, é obrigatório descer até à beira-rio, marcada pela sóbria ermida de Santo António e pela antiga Casa dos Condes de Alcoutim, para saborear uns momentos tranquilos, na companhia de uma bebida fresca numa esplanada, enquanto se aprecia os barcos de pesca que regressam ou os veleiros ancorados na pequena marina.
