Litli Hrutur is the third volcanic eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula of Iceland since 2021. Located in the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system, volcanologists are predicting that the area is waking up with an active seismic and volcanic period after 800 years of dormancy. The area is near Grindavik, Reykjavik, and Keflavik airport. Many of the eruptions are effusive eruptions that begin with fissures that open up in the ground and build up into spatter cones.
