"WHAT IS A DEBUT?"
a debut is a traditional "coming-of-age" event in celebration of a young woman turning 18. it's seen as an induction into society. there are many traditions within a debut, but since i don't live in the philippines, it wasn't possible to complete all of them.
the grand cotillion waltz dance was something i could not complete as it requires months of planning and rehearsal. i did, however, complete a joint version of the "18 roses" and "18 candles" as seen in the video (ch3). typically, men dance with the debutante during 18 roses, while women light and present a candle to the debutante with a little speech. "18 treasures" was completed in the form of 18 blue bills where a family member was seated on the couch with me (ch4), presenting a gift and a speech. the traditional father-daughter dance is a high point of a debut, but as my dad stayed back in the US we couldn't actually dance at the party (he was busy back home with our dog)!
a debut is customary in filipino culture to celebrate an 18th birthday fo young ladies, and i am so very grateful to have had an opportunity to spend one night in the presence of people i love.
