The Finals from Embark Studios is evolving into a more refined experience, with the developers taking significant steps to combat cheating by introducing advanced anti-cheat systems, ensuring a fair and enjoyable environment for all players. With the release of Season 4, the game has made yet another substantial leap toward excellence.

As someone who's been playing multiplayer shooters for a long time, I’ve found the genre increasingly monotonous, often bogged down by overwhelming live-service mechanics and intricate progression systems. However, The Finals offers a refreshing change of pace. While it does feature some live-service aspects, the core gameplay is what truly stands out. Simply put, The Finals is immensely enjoyable.

The main objective is simple: secure money and cash it out. Whether you're grabbing a deposit box in Quick Cash or battling opponents in Bank It, you and your two teammates need to think tactically in these fast-paced, 15-minute matches. The arenas have a theatrical feel, reminiscent of The Hunger Games, with roaring crowds and live commentary, adding excitement and importance to each round.

Matches are squad-based, always grouping you with two other players. There are three distinct classes—Light, Medium, and Heavy—each offering unique abilities and playstyles. Light characters are nimble but vulnerable, Medium classes strike a balance between offense and support, while Heavy characters excel in both dishing out and absorbing damage.

A standout feature is the game’s destructible environments. Almost everything on the maps—whether it's walls, floors, or ceilings—can be destroyed in real time. Using tools like Rocket Launchers or Breach Charges, players can change the battlefield dynamically. This isn’t just for visual effect; it directly impacts gameplay. For instance, Cash Out stations can be dropped to a lower level by blowing up the floor, or hidden beneath debris to defend them.

Winning in The Finals isn’t about racking up kills, as opponents respawn indefinitely. The key to victory lies in using creative tools and strategies, which makes the game incredibly engaging. I’ve already had countless memorable moments, like sneaking through a destroyed ceiling to grab a Cash Out, or using Jump Pads to quickly transport the station. These unique situations are what make The Finals stand out long after you finish playing.

While the game’s launch has been strong, there are some concerns about its longevity. At the moment, the content feels somewhat limited. Quick Cash and Competitive Tournament modes are highlights, but Bank It lacks the same level of engagement. The four maps stay fresh thanks to random elements like changing weather and shifting terrain, but there’s a need for more variety.

Another area that could use improvement is progression After playing many matches, I’ve only managed to unlock a handful of minor cosmetic items. While the game includes microtransactions and a Battle Pass, all purchasable content is purely cosmetic and doesn’t affect the actual gameplay.

Despite these minor issues, the core of the game is so enjoyable that the slow progression is easy to overlook. If Embark Studios can enhance the progression system and continue delivering regular updates, The Finals could have a bright future.

In the end, The Finals has provided me with some of the most fun I’ve had in a shooter in years. The real-time destruction mechanics create a battlefield where creativity is rewarded. With a solid foundation and a promising gameplay loop, Embark Studios has created a shooter that could give big names like Call of Duty and Battlefield a run for their money.
