Sitting in the northern Pecos watershed, at an elevation of 6,424 ft (1,958 m) Las Vegas is located in an area with a very diverse ecology, where four different ecosystems merge along the East side of the Pecos Mountains: Rocky Mountain Ponderosa forests, Juniper scrub, shortgrass prairie, and Chihuahuan Desert. Built on the Gallinas river, Las Vegas is a fertile land historically roamed by the American Bison, and is nested right next to the Pecos Mountain Range. The area is of scientific interest for its retention of native species, and much of the surrounding area still resembles what it would have looked like hundreds of years ago.

Filmed in collaboration with New Mexico Highlands University Exhibit Design: Las Vegas, Memories of Migration Exhibit.
