Significant progress has been made today toward controlling the fire at Evergreen Recycle in Park City. As part of state resources authorized by yesterday’s Local Disaster Emergency Declaration, an Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter made 15 aerial water drops over the fire, dumping about 9,000 gallons total. The helicopter refilled its 600-gallon bucket each time from a lake on Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) property.
Air operations have ended due to the water drops successfully knocking down a large part of the fire allowing Sedgwick County Fire District #1 to resume the firefight. No injuries or damage to structures have been reported at this time.
