The legend of Sikidang Crater ( Legenda terjadinya Kawah Sikidang) is a folklore (cerita rakyat) from Central Java region.
The legend of Sikidang Crater is about the origin of Sikidang Crater in Dieng Plateau. Sikidang Crater is so famous because the gas outlet always move like a deer ( in Javananese means Kidang). The unique thing about Sikidang Crater is some reidents have dreads or rambut gimbal. It is said that they are the descendants of Shinta Dewi,

And The following are the script of the English Storytelling entitled : "THE LEGEND OF SIKIDANG CRATER"

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in the southern of JAVA. The name was Dieng Kingdom. In this kingdom, there was a very glorious and magnificent palace. And, in the palace, lived a very beautiful princess named Shinta Dewi

In other place, there lived a rich prince named Kidang Garungan. The Prince was so famous of his wealths, looked like all richness were his. Beside that, Prince Kidang Garungan also had magic power. Because of his famous, Shinta Dewi heard story about him. She was curious about Prince Kidang Garungan.

One day the delegate of Prince Kidang Garungan came to the royal palace in Dieng Kingdom. He carried out mandate from the Prince Kidang Garungan to propose Princess Shinta Dewi. Without doubt, Princess Shinta Dewi agreed his proposal.

“All right.” Said the Princess, “Tell to Prince Kidang Garungan that I accept the proposal. Prince Kidang Garungan can come to my royal palace to discuss about our marriage.”

After knowing the answer, Prince Kidang Garungan immediately prepared all the things. “Ha ha ha, prepare my beautiful gold plated train and all my pretty jewels for my lovely wife to be. She will love it”, tell Prince Kidang Garungan to the palace guards.

In Dieng kingdom, Princess Shinta Dewi also prepared welcoming party. The royal palace had been decorated with flowers and beautiful ornaments. She was impatient and imagined her dream man. “Oh, darling. You must be a handsome and strong man. I have to look perfect in our first meeting you today”, said the princess in front of mirror.

However, how shocked the Princess when she saw a man with deer-head and human body. She was unexpected that her husband to be was not real man. She was confused to refuse Prince Kidang Garungan. She thought a lot and finally had an idea.
“Oh, my Prince. I will marry with you with a condition. A village near my palace was in drought. So, I want you to make a big and deep well to irrigate the village. But, you must make it by yourself in a night”, said the Princess to Kidang Garungan.

The Prince felt confused with her demand. He immediately did the demand for marrying the Princess. He made a big and deep hole with his strenght. it did not need long time to finish it,

Seeing the situation, Princess Shinta Dewi felt so worried, She was afraid if Prince Kidang Garungan made it in short time. She did not want to marry the Prince. She commanded the palace guards to cover the hole with Prince Kidang Garungan inside.

"What are you doing Shinta Dewi? Do you want to kill me? Aaaaaaaarghhhh!!!!, asked Prince KIdang Garungan angrily. Princess Shinta Dewi did not listen and kept burying Prince Kidang GArungan until he was buried inside. " I can not accept your deed because you have done with this, your generations will get consequence. They will have dreadlocks", said Prince Kidang Garungan before he died,

The land heap trembled with Prince Kidang Garungan's effort to go out from there. The exploding well which made the land trembled and the surface felt hot was called " KAWAH SIKIDANG". Some dreadlock residents in Dieng were believed to be descendants of Shinta Dewi,

The moral values of this story is we must not hurt heart and feeling of others, so we do not get bad things in the future.
