Patricia Simonet Laughing Dog Park (a.k.a. Scraps Dog Park)

The first off-leash dog park created in Spokane, it is a collaborative effort between Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) and the Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf Department.

This work honors the work and commitment given by Patricia "Trisha" Simonet to SCRAPS -- read more about her incredible story below -- into the animal community worldwide for her groundbreaking research and production of the Laughing Dog CD and her innovative behavior modification programs. Patricia was instrumental in the creation of this off-leash Park and the policies and procedures which government it.

“Trisha taught animal behavior courses at Sierra Nevada College while she attended the University of Nevada, Reno seeking her Ph.D. in animal behavior. It was here that she did ground breaking research on mirror recognition with Asian Elephants. It was also here, while researching the meaning of sounds that dogs make, she "discovered" Dog Laughter, garnering worldwide attention and an appearance on Good Morning America.

In Spokane, Trisha worked as an animal behaviorist at SCRAPS, the county animal shelter, where she helped promote pet adoptions by matching the animal's "personality" with that of their prospective owners. She was frequently the public face of SCRAPS and was interviewed by the local media when an animal "made the news". For a time she also did a weekly Saturday TV segment entitled "PETiquette" in which she advised the public on training proper pet behavior (Pet Etiquette).

In 2005 she once again received world wide publicity by demonstrating that the playing of the Dog Laughter sound at SCRAPS helped calm the dogs and increase the rate of adoptions. With the help of her husband, she produced and sold over a thousand audio CD's of the Dog Laughter sound to dog shelters through out the country and the world. Her husband plans to continue to sell her CD's.

In her "spare" time, Trisha volunteered at the Spokane Humane Society both training their volunteers as well as serving on their Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Spokane Dog Training Club where she and her husband were often seen taking classes with their furry Briards.
In 2010, the Spokane County Board of Supervisors recognized Trisha's outstanding service to the community and honored her by naming Spokane County's only off leash dog park, the "Patricia Simonet Laughing Dog Park."”
