Buying Story
I’ve had my pellet smoker for a while now and even before I bought this GMG Ledge smoker I always loved making pizza at home. I never considered that my new smoker purchase would factor in to making pizza but here we are, the GMG pizza oven attachment.

Typically, you would use your kitchen oven to cook a pizza, but today you see these at home pizza ovens more and more. Propane or electric pizza ovens that simulate that wood fire, indirect brick oven style of pizza. Why does this matter? From what I understand brick ovens help bring out the flavours on the toppings better. They also cook the pizza more evenly and give that nice smoke flavour.

I wanted to buy one, but the standalone pizza ovens I found where anywhere between $300-$500 and that was out of my price range.
It wasn’t until I was looking to upgrade to this GMG smoker that I noticed the pizza oven attachment. It was only $150 and it neatly inserts into the smoker. No extra floorspace needed or alternate source for heat, it simply sits inside the smoker and channels the heat towards the stone.

Is the pizza good in a smoker?
The short answer? YES! I’ve been using this pizza oven for a while and each time I invite friends or family over for pizza, the result is smiling faces and delicious results.

Some things to consider is that this oven gets really hot and you can cook a pizza within a couple minutes, literally. It’s very fast!

Also, when you think of brick ovens and how they cook the pizza, a big component is smoke flavor. It’s one important factor that I wasn’t sure those electric or propane ovens could ever achieve. If you have a smoker, it seems match made to have a pizza oven because not only do you get that perfect smoke flavor, but you can experiment and choose different pellets with your cooks.

How practical is the pizza oven attachment with a smoker?
Space is always a concern because I don’t like clutter or limiting my patio area. Even when buying the Ledge pellet smoker, I was conscious of the footprint it would take up. So, as I mentioned before, this pizza oven attachment doesn’t take up a lot of space. There is no propane tank to store, there is no dedicated table or cooking area I need to use it, you just drop it in to the smoker and that’s it.

I will say that getting set up takes a few minutes, as you have to remove a few internals on the smoker to place the pizza oven inside but that’s a minor inconvenience when you step back and think of the cost.
How big of a pizza can you put into the smoker? Space inside is impressive actually, so far I’ve managed to easily fit up to a large 18” pizza without any problems. It’s also nice to have enough room to fit a pizza peel in and move the pizza around.

Cleaning the pizza oven is very easy. Each major piece of the oven comes apart for easy cleaning or storage, plus if ever I need to replace the stone, or any other part, I can order from GMG without having to over a complete unit again.

Homemade pizza on the smoker vs takeout
I love takeout pizza, but ever since I started making pizzas at home with the smoker attachment I haven’t looked back. To make a fair comparison, I invited a friend to bring a takeout pizza in a cook off so to speak. We put the homemade vs takeout pizza side by side and did a taste test.
To be fair, we both took a vote on which was best, even asking the camera guy to participate as well. The vote was unanimous, of course the wood pellet smoked pizza won.

Aside from the takeout pizza being cold, which in fairness, it had to be delivered, there wasn’t as much sauce, toppings, and the flavour wasn’t even close!

I am really growing to like this pizza oven attachment for the GMG smoker. Especially because I live out of the city, we don’t have many options for takeout. After a hard day, you’re tired, want something comforting to eat, it’s easy to fire up the pizza oven and make the pizza your way and fast.

Pizza as it stands is a very social meal, but this smoker takes that to a new level of engagement and fun.
