M. Emmet Walsh, the esteemed character actor renowned for his roles in “Blade Runner,” “Blood Simple,” “Ordinary People,” “Knives Out,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Slap Shot,” and over 200 other cinematic and television projects over five decades, passed away on Tuesday, announced by his representative. At 88 years old, Walsh succumbed to cardiac arrest at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans, Vermont, as reported by his manager Sandy Joseph.

Walsh’s recent appearances included significant roles in “Knives Out,” “The Righteous Gemstones,” and “Sneaky Pete.” Rian Johnson, the writer-director of “Knives Out,” paid tribute to Walsh on social media, highlighting his unique habit of bringing a list of his extensive credits and two-dollar bills to sets, advising, “Don’t spend it and you’ll never be broke.” Walsh’s approach to acting was one of dedication and humility; he once said, “I approach each job thinking it might be my last, so it better be the best work possible. I want to be remembered as a working actor. I’m being paid for what I’d do for nothing.”
