Example 2.1
Plane: 020 35 SE
Direction of apparent dip: 070

How to determine apparent dip of a plane given its strike and true dip and a direction of interest (direction of apparent dip), using a stereonet (Schmidt, equal-area net).

Hemisphere model is used at 06:40.

This video employs what I refer to as the “American right-arm rule” for strike and dip of planes; looking to the strike direction, the plane dips in the direction of the observer’s right arm. This is very different from the traditional “British right-hand rule”.

This video was produced during the fall of 2020, at the heart of COVID, as part of my effort to teach structural geology online.
