However, a significant pātai is being raised: should a marae be established in Australia, or should tūrangawaewae remain solely in Aotearoa?

Ōhinga sat down with three long-term residents of Ahitereiria to hear their whakaaro on establishing support systems and cultural hubs for Māori living in Australia and how this might be perceived by local Indigenous communities.

Whether it’s a marae, cultural hub, or community centre, there is common ground in recognising the need for a space to nurture the next generation raised away from Aotearoa.
