How to use small plastic reels on an Ampex ATR 102. This machine is currently for sale, and has 1/4" heads.

A quarter inch machine is just fine for most mixes. In fact, it was Bruce Swedien who told me that he preferred to mix to 1/4" because of the higher tape compression, and because many of the classic songs we love were mixed to 1/4", not 1/2".
