On this episode of CUNY Laureates, we begin a new series profiling Pulitzer Prize winners who graduated from the City University of New York. First, we get a history lesson on the Pulitzer Prize and its namesake, Joseph Pulitzer, who helped set new standards for how journalism is recognized. Then, Angela Hill shines a light on the often unseen passions and pain surrounding one of America's most controversial weapons. Finally, we honor National Hispanic Heritage Month by remembering the first Latino author to win a Pulitzer Prize in fiction: Oscar Hijuelos.

CUNY Laureates is a documentary series about the lives and achievements of CUNY graduates who went on to win major awards in their respective fields. By reintroducing these exceptional minds to younger audiences, we hope to emphasize the value of a high-quality public education and demonstrate how it can transcend all social and political boundaries, even to this day.
