Hey Quite the Chap here for GolfersRX, hmmm, hmmmm, hmmm….over thinking in today’s video.

Have you ever figured out your yardage, stood back, and thought 7 iron? 8 iron won’t get there. 7 iron could be too much. I could go after an 8 iron…but if I don’t catch it I’m short. A soft 7 is perfect but I tend to quit on these soft shots and pull it off the face of the earth. What if I gripped down to the shaft on a 6.

That’s one scenario.

Now imagine you did the same thing but standing over the ball. Okay, so left is dead. If anything you want to keep it short of the pin. But don’t be short of the green that’s dead. Keep your chest over the ball. Rotate all the way through impact. We should cook steaks tonight. I wonder what Beth is doing? How long have I been standing here? Now I can’t move. What’s going on. Did I pull the 7 iron? This looks like a 5.

Ta, ta, today junior!

This isn’t about the pace of play, this is about commitment. It looks something like this:

get your yardage
commit to a club (it might be the wrong club…but pick one that isn’t going to get you in trouble. if long is dead, error short. If short is dead error long)
pick a target
address the ball
pull the trigger

It sounds silly and idealistic but you can’t score by second-guessing and overthinking everything you do. You’re either going to hit a bad shot, a good shot, or an amazing shot. It doesn’t sound that bad in those terms does it? Commit to the shot you’re facing. Stop fretting about the result before it’s had a chance to happen.

Until next time, keep it simple.
