इस किले में संग्रहालय की स्थापना मेजर कॉल्विन द्वारा 19 अक्टूबर, 1908 को "राजपूताना म्यूज़ियम" के रूप में की गई थी। इस संग्रहालय के प्रथम संग्रहाध्यक्ष पं. गौरी शंकर हीराचन्द ओझा थे। अजमेर क्षेत्र के विभिन्न स्थानों एवं भारतीय सभ्यता एवं संस्कृति के प्रमुख केन्द्रों से कला पुरासामग्री संग्रहीत कर नवीन संग्रहालय की स्थापना की गयी थी।

राजस्थान स्मारक, पुरावशेष स्थान तथा प्राचीन वस्तु अधिनियम, 1961 की धारा 3 की उपधारा 4 द्वारा प्रदत्त शक्तियों का उपयोग करते हुये, राज्य सरकार द्वारा विभाग की अधिसूचना दिनांक सितम्बर 16, 1968 के अनुसार "अकबर का किला या मैगज़ीन या दौलतखाना, अजमेर" तथा "अक़बर के किले का मुख्य द्वार" राजकीय महत्त्व का मानकर संरक्षित घोषित कर रखा है। इस संरक्षित स्मारक परिसर में राजकीय संग्रहालय, अजमेर अवस्थित है।

इस किले में बादशाह अकबर, जहाँगीर एवं शाहजहां रहा करते थे। इस किले से इंग्लैण्ड के राजा जेम्स प्रथम के राजदूत सर टॉमस रो ने ईस्ट इण्डिया कम्पनी के लिए भारत में व्यापार करने की मुग़ल बादशाह जहाँगीर से अनुमति प्राप्त की थी।

संग्रहालय की कला पुरासामग्री को विभिन्न दीर्घाओं में प्रदर्शित किया गया है। प्रथम दीर्घा में मोहन जोदड़ो की उत्खनित पुरासामग्री, द्वितीय दीर्घा में प्राचीन प्रस्तर प्रतिमाओं के साथ प्राचीन शिलालेख, प्राचीन धातु प्रतिमाएँ, तृतीय दीर्घा में अस्त्र- शस्त्र, प्रस्तर प्रतिमाएँ, लघुचित्र आदि प्रमुख रूप से प्रदर्शित एवं संग्रहीत हैं। वर्तमान में इन संग्रहालय दीर्घाओं का विकास कार्य प्रगति पर है।

The Govt. Museum is situated inside the Akbar's fort in Ajmer, also known as Magazine. It was established in Oct, 1908 under the initiative of Lord Corzon and Sir John Marshall then Director General of Archaeology in India. Later on developed by its first Superintendent Pandit Gori Shankar Heera Chand Ojha.

The aim of which is to focus the cultural heritage of the region through its exhibits.

The Museum primarily consists of sculptures, inscriptions, coins, pre-historic section, miniature paintings, arms and armour and objects of art and crafts.

Sculptures - Sculptures constitute the most interesting section in the museum. It has some of the ancient, rare and unique pieces which have been acquired from Pushkar, Adhai-din-ka- jhopara, Bhagera, Pisangan, Harsnath (Sikar). Bharatpur, Sirohi, Arthuna and Osian.

These sculptures rang in date from Gupta period down to the 19th century A.D., represent Shaiv, Vaishnava and Jain Paiths respectively. Among these art specimens are some of the super master pieces like lingodbhav maheswar (No.374), Chaturmukh Shivlinga' as (No. 15 &16). Ganesh (No. 451), Varah (No. 448), laxmi Narain (No. 352), Kuber (No. 54, 349, 356), and Idra (No. 55) etc.

Besides, some interesting Jain figures are also
Rajasthan being an important centre of Jain culture is responsible for giving a good collection of Jain sculptures to this museum. Which include images of Rishabhnath (No. 44), Parsvanath (No. 56 &17), Kunthunath (No.1143), Mahaveer (No.279), Shantinath (No.344-345), Yaksha Gaumukh (No.370), and Sarawati (No. 57-58) reserve special attention and prove the Jain influence in the region.

The majority of sculptural collection is assignable to the 10th cent. A.D. to 12th cent. A.D. and it was the period during which the Chouhan Kings of the Ajmer like Simhraj. Vigrahraj 2nd Vigrahraj 3rd Ajaydeo, Vigrahraj 4th (Nick named Visaldeo) Someswar and the great Prithaviraj 3rd.

This period witnessed the growth in every field of life art architecture and literary activities reached in geith Ajmer, Bhagera, Sarwar, Naraina, Bisalpur, Ranthambhor and Nadol were main cultural centers in Rajasthan in this period.

The materials are used are light same stone, white marble schist, basalt, granite and in 11- 12th cent. images (from-Baghera) a fine graived black soft stone, which makes possible high polished minute covering, clear cut and finest featuring of the figures
