Welcome back!
Continuing to get caught up on videos. Thought I’d mention some more short hikes in Red River Gorge since the shorter hikes seem to be a hit. The places we visit today will be ‘off trail’ but not far from official trails or have worn ‘user trails.’ These short hikes are intended more for intermediate or advanced hikers who are able to use GPS and have good sense of direction/the ability to navigate through the woods without an official trail. Please know your abilities and don’t attempt anything out of your comfort zone while in RRG.
On this adventure, from Osborne Bend Trailhead, we will check out Moonshiner’s Arch, Osborne Bend Arch, Unicorn Arch and Trapdoor Arch. The arch furthest from the trailhead is Osborne Bend Arch (right at 1 mile if you went out and back) and the arches closest to the trailhead would be Trapdoor and Moonshiner’s (each of which would be .5 mile out and back).
The final stop on today’s adventure is Castle Arch. One of the bigger but lesser known arches in RRG. This arch is the most challenging to get to as it is all ‘off trail’ and has the most elevation gain, but the work/effort is worth the reward at the end.
If you’re comfortable with ‘off trail hiking’ I’d highly recommend these hikes when in the Red. Come along and let’s see what all this area has to offer!
For more arch info be sure to check out Bill Patrick’s documentation of RRG arches via DVDs. http://www.redrivergorgearches.com/
Hope you enjoy this adventure. Thanks for watching!
