Ben Bowley, Clipper Race Chief Instructor, provides a guide to fundamental winch handling; to safely dress, load, and unload a winch . Everything on a Clipper 70 is big and heavy; for this reason, winches are used for pretty much all line handling. The winches operate under enormous loads and, if not treated with respect, could easily cause injury.
