What inspired the architecture of the Africa Center in New York City? Our design team interpreted the craft traditions of the African continent, as described here by Project Manager and RAMSA IDEA Committee Chair Gaylin Bowie. Applied to the building’s facade architecture, trapezoidal wall panels - lovingly referred to as “dancing mullions” - create a woven, tiled pattern that climbs the 19 stories of the building. We’re proud to observe Black History Month and amplify diverse voices.

The Africa Center design team was led by Dan Lobitz, Gaylin Bowie, Paul Whalen, Chen-Huan Liao, Mike Soriano, and Gemma Kim of RAMSA | Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
