This history of modern Bible scholarship explains how we got the Greek New Testament behind nearly every single modern Bible translation - the so-called Critical Text.

Is this the restored "original" Bible that was lost for nearly 2,000 years? Or is this a "new" Bible created by modern scholars, using flawed methodology and corrupted manuscripts with dubious provenance?

⚠️ WARNING! - This topic is part of an ongoing, heated debate. We welcome comments with constructive criticism. But hateful or disrespectful comments are not allowed.

This project is an ongoing reconstruction by scholars of the earliest form of the Bible, using the discipline of textual criticism. This scholarship began in the 19th century and continues to the present day.

As we explore the history behind various textual traditions, we invite viewers to make their own determinations regarding which Bible versions and translations they prefer. Our presentations attempt to present the facts as objectively and fairly as possible.

Cross Bible's web-based Bible study software will offer a number of different versions for comparison and cross referencing. Sign up for our mailing list for updates and early access to new features.

Corrections:
5:10 - It is an oversimplification to characterize the 16 'omitted verses' (which is not a comprehensive list) as a feature of the Alexandrian Text, as opposed to the Byzantine Text. We will delve into more detail in future videos to clarify the nuances we didn't have time to cover here.
7:24 - Oops! The word "papyrus" was mistakenly used here in lieu of "parchment". Sorry about that.
10:00 - It can be argued that earlier English translations, such as those of Campbell and Kneeland, also revised the KJV based on "modern scholarship," if Griesbach's Greek New Testament from the late 18th and early 19th century is considered the forerunner of what should be considered "modern scholarship".
