This tutorial shows how to dummy-code categorical variables with 3 or more values in SPSS. The reason for dummycoding categorical variables is that regression models require numerical input. Categorical variables like gender or favourite color are nor numerical by nature and need to be dummy coded.

The way it works is to give each category its own dummy variable. For example, if you have university degree (no degree, bachelor's master's), you will end up with 3 dummy variables. Dummy_no_degree, Dummy_bachelor and Dummy_master. Each will have the values 0 and 1, indicating whether that value is present or not.

Newer versions of SPSS have a function "Create Dummy Variables" directly.
If your version of SPSS does not provide this tool, a manual coding is necessary: UPCOMING.
