Nurses assess pulses to evaluate heart rate and rhythm, as well as peripheral circulation. Common pulse points are the radial artery at the wrist, carotid artery in the neck, brachial artery in the antecubital space, femoral artery in the groin, dorsalis pedis and posterior tibialis arteries in the feet. The apical pulse can be auscultated over the point of maximal impulse using a stethoscope. Assessing pulses at different locations allows comparison of rhythm, rate, and strength to identify abnormalities.
