When you are faced with an irrigation repair, it is always better to dig it out a little bit more because you may find other things you need to fix. When you do find other fixes back to back, cut it all out and start over and make the sprinkler system repair simple and clean. It is a lot of work to dig out an irrigation repair, but it is necessary and apart of the job. So dig it out a little bit further and dig it out plenty deep to do the repair. Do a good job and fix it all right the first time
