Most people think investing well is just about buying good and profitable companies. Some colleagues of mine, for example, only buy companies that have shown positive growth and profits every single year for the last ten years. And while this does give you a solid filter to find reliable names, it also causes you to miss out on great investments. Plus, you'll be always paying a premium for these well-known, quality businesses. So, most of the time, you'll paying a high price for these companies.
In my opinion, investing well is much more about finding cheap and undervalued stocks/assets. And there's a huge difference between buying "good and profitable stocks" and buying cheap and undervalued ones.
