ENGINE OF THE FUTURE is a multi-tonal piece that features several of our 'classic' drum instruments spun 90º so that they're played on their sides (rather than traditionally with the heads on top) and the configuration is suggestive of a giant rocket ship! New instruments incorporated in the piece include: ALUMINUM RODS – found in a dumpster near a metal shop; and ANNOYOPHONES – made from dishwasher hose, bag- pipe reeds, and balloons. The choreography was inspired by the classic worker scene in Fritz Lang’s 1927 film masterpiece, "Metropolis".
