In photography like in cinematography the F-number is one of the most important parameter to master and to understand.
The F-number is related to the amount of light that passes though the lens, and has a huge impact on the depth of field.
We call is the F-number, because it's dimensionless, and because the effective aperture of the iris is connected to the focal length.
Here are the f-number with an increase of one stop between each value :
F/2 - F/2.8 - F/4 - F/5.6 - F/8 - F/11 - F/16 - F/22
