Effexor (venlafaxine) is one of the most difficult antidepressants to stop, with a short half-life and notoriously severe withdrawal symptoms.
This session will focus on the science behind discontinuing Effexor, clinical considerations, and how we apply this at Outro.

Dr. Bryan Shapiro, Medical Director
Dr. Shapiro is a board-certified psychiatrist in California, where he holds an academic position at UC Irvine Medical Center and serves as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist. He also the Director of Psychopharmacology for the UC Irvine/UC Davis Train New Trainers (TNT program) where he coaches primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and psychiatric residents on responsible prescribing of psychiatric medications. As a psychiatric resident, Dr. Shapiro was involved in the original conceptualization on hyperbolic tapering of antidepressants driven by his own lived experience with antidepressant withdrawal.
Dr. Shapiro functions as Outro’s Medical Director and is dedicated to the mission of helping patients safely and successfully taper their antidepressants and fully restore their quality of life.
Charlotte Herring, Lead Nurse Practitioner
Charlotte Herring is a board certified nurse practitioner, holistic health coach, registered yoga teacher (RYT-200), and mindfulness practitioner. She has been with the Outro team since 2022, where she served as a consultant and content creator for the Outro Library during their Canadian pilot. Today, Charlotte leads the Outro US nurse practitioner team, and also is a frequent co-host of Outro's webinar series.
