The growth zone is outside of your comfort zone.

When was the last time you stepped outside of your comfort zone?

I remember when I graduated from Hampton University and I took a $15 China bus to New York. I had about $300 in my bank account, an air mattress, and a suitcase. I did not have a paid opportunity, but I had just enough faith to create one.

I asked myself, “Did you really just move to New York with no money or job? Chillleee, what are you doing?” Then, self-doubt, fear, and insecurity started to collectively smile at me like the Joker. Amused, I smiled back with a neck roll. I replied, “I would rather be in New York broke than wondering what could have happened. I’m staying!” (Yes, I shut down my negative thoughts when they get reckless.)

I remember the first night I slept in my Brooklyn apartment. I had no furniture, curtains, grocery, appliances, or electronics besides my cell phone. I used my good ole’ tax refund check to pay the first month, last month, and security deposit to the landlord. I felt so vulnerable, but I was grateful to have just enough tape to cover the holes in the air mattress.

Trust me, I understand dream chasing. I went BEYOND my comfort zone, yet it was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I was WILLING TO BET ON MYSELF. Actually, I bet on GOD. That day turned into nearly a decade of managing purpose-driven marketing programs that serve the youth, Fortune 100 companies, and multicultural audiences.

When was the last time you decided you were worthy enough to go after the thing you really want despite your age, education level, or background?

When was the last time you didn’t care if you looked foolish to others?

Listen, I do not have a “rags to riches” story although I have respect and compassion for those with different adversities. Either way, the point is the same – no matter where you start, bet on yourself. Actually, bet on GOD.
