What awaits us next year? What wishes for the New Year?
Wealth is not always successful and happy, and what is not in our way does not have to be disastrous for a person.

At the beginning of the new year, fortune telling and horoscopes are very popular. One of the priests said that one day, during a Christmas carol visit, he sees that on a table in an old lady's house there is an open colorful newspaper on the page with horoscopes and asks: Do you believe in horoscopes? No, priest, I absolutely do not believe it, I read it only for fun, for entertainment, but I absolutely do not believe in it at all. And do you believe in the Word of God? Of course, please, Father. And do you read them? - Well, not too much. What awaits us next year? We try to find out from different horoscopes and some people actually believe it.

Meanwhile, today in God's Word we find the answer to what awaits us in the new year. God will bless us. In the Book of Numbers, we find a beautiful blessing that the Lord commanded to give Aaron over the people: May the Lord bless you and keep you. Let his face shine upon you and give you grace. May the Lord turn His face to you and give you peace. What does it mean that God blesses us in life? Let me start by saying that wishing someone God's blessing is not entirely correct: I wish that God would bless you. God always blesses us, he is a Father who loves us with infinite love. It's not like he blesses us once and denies us his blessing. These wishes should either be expressed differently or understood slightly differently. The point is for us to open ourselves to God's blessing. So we should actually say, wishing someone the best for the New Year: I wish you would be able to receive God's blessing. What does it mean to receive God's blessing, to live God's blessing? Very often our Christmas or even name day wishes say a lot about our approach to the world. We wish someone "all the best". We can ask ourselves whether prosperity really is the pinnacle of dreams. If everything goes our way, will we be happy then?

I will not forget this situation: I had a retreat in one of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Krakow and I just used this example about a lottery coupon: Back in the days when there were no computers, someone won a large sum in a lottery ticket, and then it turned out that he was sure because he had the penciled numbers that showed on television - that he is the winner, but unfortunately, he lost the proof of payment and the proof he had to have to get this award and the award was forfeited. And I say this in this retreat sermon. After the sermon, the parish priest comes up to me, we go out in front of the church and says: Father, I will tell you something like this - maybe in the life of this man who lost the lottery ticket it was happy. Do you see this house? I look at such a hut, which could hardly be called home - the plaster has fallen off, the fence has fallen down, there are only bushes in the garden, weeds, some yellowed curtains, broken glass, there is a rusty satellite dish. And he says: These are my parishioners who won a million in lottery tickets many years ago. It seemed that the world smiled at them, that life was open to them. It turned out that this normally living family, after this win, quickly fell into complete disrepair, they simply could not cope with the money. This money drove them down.
