Composed by Sting, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" is a hit by British rock band "The Police" and released in September 1980 as the first single from their third album "Zenyatta Mondatta".
The band's third number one on the UK Singles Chart and was also the biggest selling single of 1980 in the UK, selling 808,000 copies in 1980 alone. The song also charted in the top ten in Australia, Canada and the US. The Police won the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "Don't Stand So Close to Me".

The version we see here was re-recorded in 1986 with a new arrangement, a different chorus and a more opulent production. The new version appeared as "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86" on the album Every Breath You Take: The Singles, and was released as a single, reaching No. 24 in the UK charts. It also peaked at number 11 in Ireland, 14 in New Zealand, 19 in the Netherlands MegaCharts Singles Chart (number 20 on the Dutch Top 40), 27 in Canada and 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 (number 10 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks). .

This new music video was produced by ~Godley & Creme~, notable for their prodigious use of animated computer graphics. The version of the song used in this music video was subtly different from the version released as a single. It was approximately 6 seconds shorter, with a longer atmospheric pause before the first lyric, but part of the chorus was edited out towards the end. This version is only available on the music video; it was never released separately as an audio recording.

The lyrics tell the story of a teacher who has a sexual relationship with a student, who in turn is discovered. The phrase "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov" alludes to the novel of the character “Lolita”, by Vladimir Nabokov, which addresses somewhat similar issues. A curious detail is that singer Sting once worked as an English teacher, but later denied that the lyrics are autobiographical.

While Sting was in Montserrat, he was asked to perform backing vocals on "Money for Nothing", the band's song "Dire Straits", and reused the melody from the chorus of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" in counterpoint to the lyrics. 'I want my MTV'. It was only after this story was reported to reporters during promotions for the "Brothers in Arms" album that Sting's lawyers became involved, and later, copies of the "Dire Straits" album had to pay Sting royalties on the song.
