Kerestinec Castle, it’s beautiful appearance and location distracts from a truly horrific past…

This fortified structure surrounded by a wide moat was originally built for a Hungarian count in 1575, it housed a number of rulers over the years and also served as a meeting point for the Croatian parliament.

It wasn’t until 1947 that a dark history began being written within the walls of this castle…
It was seized by the Ustashe regime, a terrorist organisation heavily influenced by nazism and fascism.
The castle was turned into a concentration camp, approximately 900 prisoners were submitted within its short period of operation, their genocides against serbs and jews were expressions of Nazi racial ideology.
After a prison break, the camp was promptly closed down and any remaining prisoners were sent to nearby Jasenovac, where around 100,000 victims were killed and has been described as ‘more brutal than a auschwitz’.
The regime continued to use the castle as a training camp for some time after.

In 1991, the castle again became a place of incarceration and torture, the Croatian Army used it as a detention centre during the Croatian War Of Independence.
The commander and guards were later put on trial in 2012 for war crimes after using physical and psychological torture against the prisoners.

Some years down the line, the castle stands empty and abandoned. Roofs have been repaired, the overgrowth cleared and in recent years a number of events have been held in the central courtyard, the future may hold something more for this place, although the devastating history can never be forgotten…
