The 12859 / 12860 Gitanjali Express is a daily train running between two metro cities, Kolkata, (Howrah Junction) in West Bengal and Mumbai, (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) in Maharashtra connecting the East with the West. Numbered 12859/60 this train belongs to the Superfast category. This train takes 30½ hrs to cover the distance of 1968 km between Mumbai and Howrah while the return takes 31.5 hrs. This is first train which depart behind pure AC Loco from Mumbai CST after conversion of Mumbai CST to Thane from DC to AC. It has the top most priority in Howrah Mumbai route.
Rabindranath Tagore, a famous poet of India, wrote the book Gitanjali. Since this train, too, starts from Bengal this train has the same name. People love the train as much the book. This is the first Classless train in India introduced by Ex Railway Minister Prof. Madhu Dandvate on 26 December 1977.
The 12859/12860 Gitanjali Express runs from Howrah Junction via Kharagpur Junction, Tatanagar Junction, Rourkela Junction, Bilaspur Junction, Raipur Junction, Durg, Nagpur Junction, Wardha Junction, Badnera Junction, Akola Junction, Bhusaval Junction, Jalgaon Junction, Nasik Road, Igatpuri to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and vice versa.
Train No.12859 leaves source point, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 6:00 am and reaches its destination station Howrah Junction at 12:30 noon the next day. Train No.12860 leaves Howrah Junction at 1:40 pm and reach its destination, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 9:20 pm next day.
It is hauled by a Howrah based WAP7 end to end.

Howrah railway station, also known as Howrah Junction, is a railway station located in the city of Howrah, West Bengal, India. It is the oldest and largest existing railway complex in India. It is one of the busiest train stations in the world. About 600 passenger trains pass through the station each day, utilising its 23 platforms, and serving more than one million passengers per day. Howrah is one of five intercity train stations serving the Kolkata metropolitan area (including Howrah and its twin city of Kolkata), the others being Sealdah, Santragachi, Shalimar and Kolkata railway stations.
Eastern Railway, who operate the station, refer to the station as "Howrah". Indian Railways refers to the station as "Howrah Junction".
The nearby Rail Museum, Howrah opened in 2006 contains a section dedicated to the heritage and history of Howrah railway station.
The station is the divisional headquarters for the Eastern Railway.
The station has 23 platforms. Platforms 1 to 16 are located in the old complex, referred to as "Terminal 1". It serves the local and long-distance trains of Eastern Railway and local trains of South Eastern Railway. Platforms 17 to 23 are in the new complex, referred to as "Terminal 2". It serves the long-distance trains of South Eastern Railway.
The station has a diesel-locomotive shed with room for 84 locomotives. The electric-locomotive shed has room for 96 locomotives. There is also an electric-trip shed with the capacity to hold up to 20 locomotives. The sheds accommodate 150+ WAP-4, WAP-5, and WAP-7 locomotives.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (officially Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) (station code: CSTM (mainline)/ST (suburban)), also known by its former name Victoria Terminus (station code: BBVT/VT), is a historic terminal train station and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
The terminus was designed by British born architectural engineer Frederick William Stevens, in an exuberant Italian Gothic style. Its construction began in 1878, in a location south of the old Bori Bunder railway station, and was completed in 1887, the year marking 50 years of Queen Victoria's rule, the building being named, Victoria Terminus.
In March 1996 the station's name was changed to "Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus" (with station code CST). Both former initials "VT" and the current, "CST", are also commonly used.
The terminus is the headquarters of India's Central Railway. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India, serving as a terminal for both long-distance- and suburban trains.
CSMT has a total of 18 platforms—seven platforms are for suburban EMU trains and eleven platforms (Platform 8 to Platform 18) are for long-distance trains. Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Tejas Express leave from Platform No. 18. Air-conditioned dormitories were inaugurated at CST on 16 April 2013.
The station has been the location of filming the "Jai Ho" song in Slumdog Millionaire and the 2011 Indian film Ra.One.
