Hongya Cave, originally named Hongya Gate, was one of the ancient gates of Chongqing, located at 88 Binjiang Road, Jialing River, Yuzhong District, Chongqing. Hongya Gate was a city gate of Chongqing, situated between the Linjiang Gate and Qiansimen Gate, near the Jialing River, and was first constructed during the Song Dynasty. In the 46th year of the Kangxi reign (1707), Ba County magistrate Kong Yuzhong divided Chongqing into 29 neighborhoods and 15 districts. Inside and outside Hongya Gate were known as Hongya Neighborhood and Hongya District, respectively.
Hongya Gate was located about 400 meters east of Linjiang Gate and was closed during the fortification efforts of Dai Ding. A natural cave existed on the cliff by the river, known as Hongya Cave, which gave the gate its name. This cave was a well-known scenic spot in ancient times.
The Hongya Cave Folk Culture Area officially opened in 2006. Its main structure, designed in the traditional Chongqing stilted building style, is built against the mountain, standing 11 stories high with a commercial area of 53,000 square meters. Today, it is a national 4A-level tourist attraction.
Since 2016, the nightscape of Hongya Cave has gone viral on social media platforms like Douyin (TikTok) in mainland China, attracting increasing numbers of tourists year after year. According to the "2019 May Day Holiday Popular Attractions Trend Report" by Mafengwo Travel, Hongya Cave surpassed the Forbidden City in Beijing, ranking third among domestic attractions in mainland China. The Chongqing government has since hailed it as a "city icon" and "Chongqing's guest hall."


洪崖洞，原名洪崖门，是古重庆城门之一，位于重庆市渝中区嘉陵江滨江路88号.洪崖门，是重庆的一座城门，毗邻嘉陵江在临江、千斯门二门之间，宋代修筑。
康熙四十六年(1707年)，巴县知县孔毓忠将重庆城分为29坊15厢。洪崖门内外，分别为洪崖坊、洪崖厢。
洪崖门在临江门之东约四百米处，戴鼎筑城时列为闭门。此地临江崖壁上有一天然崖洞，就叫洪崖洞，门因洞而得名。此洞为旧时名胜.

洪崖洞民俗风貌区于2006年正式开放。其主体建筑仿照重庆传统吊脚楼的风格，依山而建，高11层，商业面积5.3万平方米，目前是国家4A级旅游景区。
2016年后，洪崖洞民俗风貌区的夜景凭借抖音等短视频平台于中国内地社交网络走红，游客人数连年增多，根据马蜂窝旅游网发布之“2019年五一小长假境内热门景点趋势报告”，洪崖洞民俗风貌区超越北京故宫，位列中国内地第三名，被重庆官方誉为“城市名片”和“重庆宴客厅”。
