This is the fall 2024 organic chemistry 1 module 1 lecture 2 presented on Friday August 23, 2024. In this screencast, the discussion of the structure of AZT was continued. Structural features of the molecule including carbon classification according to bonds (sigma and pi) and attached hydrogens (methyl, methylene, methine) were examined in order to understand how carbon can be present in different forms. The explanation of what a heteroatom is such as N, O, or F (along with P, S, or Cl) were explained along with their associated bonding patterns and number of lone pairs of electrons required to meet the octet rule. Lastly, a brief introduction to nuclear magnetic spectroscopy for 13C and 1H were discussed to show how organic chemists use analytical instruments to determine structure. Finally, functional groups were introduced and how spectroscopy is used to figure out their presence in a molecule.
