Verticutting is the process of vertically mowing your lawn with the goal of removing excessive thatch which helps thin out the canopy.

The process results in more heat and sunlight reaching the soil which promotes healthier turf. Verticutting also cuts the stolons which are the surface runners that some grasses like Bermuda use to spread. This helps promote new growth resulting in a tighter canopy once the lawn recovers.

So it’s really a single process with several benefits. Excessive thatch reduction while also exposing more of the soil allowing sunlight, water , air, and fertilizer to work more effectively. Though verticutting is a labor-intensive process, the benefits make it worth considering for your lawn care program.
