In recent years, spring releases have delivered some big anthems for impending festival seasons, and 2023 is set to be no different with this offering from Low Down Deep. A culmination of producers, vocalists and a remix competition all combine in a back story that would leave the Elon Musk’s of the world scratching their head on how this unlikely group of five artists came together and created the catchy “Big Man Party”
Between them, we have Shabba D who is one of the top Jungle / Drum and Bass MCs of the last four decades, and also happened to reach quadruple platinum status in Japan from international sales as part of Zilch’s 3-2-1 album, which included the track “Charlies Children”, that also reached the number one spot on the Japanese National Charts. He is an MC who has inspired multiple waves of artists through his solo work, link ups with the late legend MC Skibadee, and touring the world as part of Drum and Bass “Supergroup” SASASAS. Then we have an accomplished lyricist in Steelo, who has worked with some of the world’s best artists, music producers, singer / songwriters and has a background that includes enrollment in 90’s boy band Eclipse, who toured with Billy Piper, Mystique and Five to name just a few. He moved on to a solo career spanning the last three decades where he spread the wings of his musical versatility and worked with artists and brands across multiple genres including MTV Base, Big Narstie, Tiny Tempah, Wiley and Kelle Le Roc.
The production side of this release is where things take quite a Christopher Nolan worthy twist, well at least for the modern music industry. The original version of DJ Slipz’s – Hurt was set free to the remixing world in the form of a competition, where DJ Frenzee picked up the parts. His version did not make the cut-off date for the competition but did find its way to Shabba D who loved the track and got straight in the studio to work on it with Steelo. With its catchy hook and radio friendly vibe there was a desire to have a “dirtier” DJ friendly version to fit the underground scene, so up stepped the aptly named Filthy Habits who delivered one of the most anticipated remixes of the recent Low Down Deep catalogue.
