The Art Deco style of the 1930's and 40's radio sets were the inspiration for this project. I wanted to practice the techniques of building segmented blanks and rings and this bowl was the ideal project. As you will see everything did not go according to plan but I got there in the end.

The background and main timber of the bowl is Beech. The sun and sunbeams are made from straight grained Limewood and the segmented rim is walnut.

There are many segment calculators on the internet but I love this one from Chas Jones from his 'Mainly Woodturning' website. The calculator is just one of the many aids available for the wood worker and turner and its well worth taking a look.

✦Rasmussen Ring Clamp✦
See Earl Rasmussen's video here describing and demonstrating the segment clamp he uses for gluing up his rings. You may find other video's of Earls interesting if you are into segmented and open segmented turning.

✦Lightweight Longworth Style Chuck✦
The Longworth Chuck was built following Stephen Ogle's excellent video tutorial. He makes two versions of the chuck. Mine is a smaller version and lightweight to be used primarily to surface and align segmented ring when gluing in place.
