Not everyone back in medieval times was highly proficient in all kinds of fancy techniques, and on the battlefield there was likely at least some brute force involved... but applying the label "master of historical fencing" to a slugfest of the same downward chop over and over with zero defense? Ahem...

This is a pet peeve of mine. It's also why the stereotype of the lumbering brute with max armor but no skill is still around, even though we have plenty of sources to debunk that myth. We know a lot about medieval and renaissance martial arts, although there are also plenty of things we can't say for sure, especially when it comes to fighting on the battlefield.
