Alone Season 8 Episode 10 was a good one! Here's my recap, med checks, airplanes, predator calls and all!

Biko is still having trouble with his gillnet. If you look at the topography, you can think of the lake bed as an extension of the land which you can see. A long sloping shoreline indicates a long, shallow sloping lake bed which makes it tough to fish from shore.
Biko’s fireplace is built on the outside like mine which isn’t ideal. I’ve had several questions about that. I’m not sure if Biko had the same issue as me but the reason I built mine on the outside was because the mud I used as mortar was mostly sand and did a poor job sealing up the cracks. It would have been more efficient to have it on the inside but the materials just wouldn’t allow for it.

Theresa talks about how declining body condition and lack of sleep can impact your decision making. She’s foraging for rose hips. They cling to the bushes well into winter.

Colter’s boat is sank! I’ve seen several questions about why Colter left his boat on the lake rather than dragging it ashore. I don’t know for sure but I suspect he was thinking that a bear might rip it up if he left it on the shoreline. A lot of people would have let the sunken boat defeat them but Colter just keeps pushing forward. Bails out and repairs the boat, then Catches another big bull trout in his net!

I'm getting thin! After the season wraps up I’ll talk about how much I lost. In the last episode you can see me getting frustrated with the net. But I never GAVE UP on the gill net! That’s something I try to reinforce with Coye and Fen, life throws us obstacles so we’ll have something to overcome. And if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, and try again.

I also find some fresh lion sign and talk about “walking a cat down”. This is something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I make a predator call. But see fresh grizzly tracks as soon as I go to blow on the call! Don’t want to sound like a dying rabbit while there’s a griz poking around. Carved a float plane for Coye using just my axe and leatherman p4.

There’s a pretty telling scene during Theresa’s med check when the Dr. asks if she feels like she’s lost more weight. She just says, Mmm. I know exactly what was going through her head at that moment. You’re afraid, to tell them anything. Because you think they might use it in, what in your mind, is against you. You don’t want to give them any excuse to pull you. They’re just looking out for your safety. I think we all realize that. But at the same time you’re so committed that you would literally starve yourself to near death rather than quit or give them an excuse to pull you. And so the med team has a very difficult job.

Colter never quits. That’s one of the things I really like about him. He never gives up. In a challenge like this, your fortune can change in the blink of an eye! But you’ve got to be out there working, looking for those opportunities. Those opportunities may never come. And unfortunately for Colter that was just a tough lake to fish. If we’d been on Great Slave, or any other place with decent fishing I think Colter would have crushed it with that strategy.

In the end, the med team concludes that he’s lost too much weight and he’s medically pulled. I hated to see that because he tried so hard and he’s such a likable person. Colter is pretty hard on himself. But I think he did great given what we had to work with. It was just a tough place to make a living. It would have been tough there with a rifle and modern fishing equipment.
