Description: International digital identity infrastructures underpin the goals of governments, intergovernmental agencies (e.g., United Nations' sustainable development goals), and private industry alike. At a human level, they determine the extent to which individuals are able to engage as citizens, participate in the economy, and thrive in the modern era. This session shares the findings of a recent white paper, which has brought together multiple organizations and dozens of public and private sector thought leaders. In the first half of this presentation, the editors will provide an overview of different approaches and implementations around the world. They will speak to the broad challenges faced by government officials and compare/contrast the goals of intergovernmental projects (e.g., the UN and World Bank), Europe’s eIDAS 2, state and federal projects, the India stack, and more. The discussion will highlight major themes and points of difference, including perspectives on institutional context, privacy rights, citizen security, and new/existing technologies. The remainder of the session will encourage open discussion on the proposed recommendations in the white paper, including those calling for a greater focus on globally interoperable interfaces and the treatment of identity as critical national infrastructure.
