Eva Cassidy's musical pallet was the universe of popular songs previously associated with other great artists. According to Mick Fleetwood re Eva's open mic nights at his club in Arlington, VA, "Eva had found her unique voice to fearlessly carve her own path among the giants who came before."

Unlike athletic achievements measured in time and space, art is less a competition than a message from the heart. Roberta Flack, perhaps, said it best: "Not only was Eva blessed with her voice, but also with her heart."

Desperado is the first song co-written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Henley's lead vocal on the title song of the Eagles' second studio album (1973) is a Western themed reflection on an aging young man's wasted youth. Linda Ronstadt's cover later that year (on her Don't Cry Now album) re-examined the young man dilemma from the perspective of the Queen of Hearts. Henley and Frey credit Ronstadt's version as cementing their song into the public consciousness.

Now, comes Eva Cassidy's vocal interpretation of the Henley/Frey classic, Desperado, exactly 30 years after her original September 24, 1994 performance at Pearl's (a now defunct club in Annapolis). The other instruments from the night have been replaced by Lenny Williams' 2024 Fender Rhodes electric piano/B-3 Hammond organ parts reminiscent of the era that spawned the song (though different from the acoustic piano featured on both original recordings). Who better to span the decades than Eva's now legendary musical keyboard partner.
