Anything we achieve is somehow nested in our ability to imagine. Imagination is a powerful tool that allows us to fuse together our experiences, learnings and so many other things. Not only does it allow us the gift of discreet creative thinking but also helps us project a goal into the future by bringing together all the learnings, memories, and experiences.

The problem is, only a few with a healthy mental make up can harness the ability of imagination. On the other hand, people who are damaged by criticism do not possess this capability. These people often have an overwhelmed amygdala-a tiny part of the brain responsible for attaching emotional labels to experiences. People with a healthy amygdala often have a positive emotional label to tasks while people who have faced chronic criticism only have negative emotional labels.

Every Time they try to do something, they remember the negative emotional labels and often stop that activity. These negative feelings persistently scare them away from all types of activities including their skills and talents. In other words, they are stuck in inaction due to these negative emotions. In fact, this aspect is highlighted in the movie inception where Leonardo’s characters knew the importance of generating positive emotional reaction and asked Eames to rephrase his narrative to attain their goals.

Because people who face criticism do not take action, they give off a perception that they are lazy or indisciplined. However, these people do not act simply because they have a broken trail of experience and skills that hinders their imagination, including imagining their desired life goals.

People who have faced criticism can heal by cutting harmful people off. They should start their favorite activities briskly and avoid making too many changes too quickly. The idea is to build some momentum and then build their new life on their newfound values and skills that are molded by honesty.
