Spring maize is commonly planted from mid of January to the end of February. In this video, we have discussed the feasibility of planting of sugarcane in the ridges of short durational/early maturing spring maize variety DK 6317 or alike at the distance of 2.5 feet apart 88 ridges per acre.
We have given two suggestions. One is to plant maize from end January to 10 th of February and for better germination of sugarcane, its sets should be planted one month after planting of maize. The 2nd option is to plant both maize and sugarcane using its higher seed rate at the same time especially after mid of February.
A farmer Akhter Shah of Nankana Sahib 0302 4468626 may advise better in this regard.
Intercropping is very successful in sugarcane. A wide range of vegetables and pulses can be planted in September sown crop of sugarcane. We have advised especially farmers having small size of land holding , about different profitable combinations of intercrops in this video. For example, potato and sugarcane, garlic and sugarcane, Canola in sugarcane, Small fennel (Klonji) and sugarcane are considered as the most profitable intercrops. Onion in sugarcane, tobacco in sugarcane and early meteor peas in sugarcane are considered as intermediate profitable intercrops. In addition to these, radish, turnip, lentils and gram may also be adjusted as intercrop in September sown sugarcane.
Intercropping is very successful strategy. A wide range of vegetables and pulses can be planted in form of inter crop technique. Main benefit of intercrop is the saving of time. It produces two crops in the same span of time. Moreover, precious land is also used properly to gain maximum benefit of production frop two crop at the same period of time. Initially, benefits and conditions of intercropping has been highlighted. We have advised especially farmers having small size of land holding, about different combination of intercrops in this video. Therefore, we have recommended that maize fodder crop may be grown as additional crop. Moreover, okra or ladys finger, coriander alone or in combination with round gourd (Tinda), sugarcane plus mung bean, sugarcane plus mash been (black gram/Mash), sugarcane plus cowpeas can also be used to be grown as inter crops.
