Als Alfred der Grosse 871 König von Wessex wurde, wurden die Britischen Inseln bereits seit vielen Jahren von Wikingern heimgesucht. Das so genannte große heidnische Heer befand sich seit 865 in England, hatte Northumbrien und Ostanglien erobert und übte Druck auf Merzien aus. Nun wandten die Wikinger sich Wessex zu, dem Königreich der Westsachsen, dem Reich Alfreds. Laut dem Historiker Daniel Anlezark, begannen damit " acht Jahre ununterbrochener Krieg, in dem es manchmal wenig Hoffnung auf einen Sieg [für die Westsachsen] gab". Alfred begegnete dieser Bedrohung, indem er sich den Stärken und Schwächen seiner Gegner anpasste und langfristig sogar seine Armee und insbesondere sein Verteidigungssystem reformierte. Diese Reformen trugen wesentlich zur Stabilisierung seiner Regierung bei, die für frühmittelalterliche Verhältnisse erstaunlich stark zentralisiert war. Alfred war einfallsreich, wenn es darum ging die Wikinger auf Distanz zu halten. Seine fünf wichtigsten Methoden sehen wir uns in diesem Video an.
