화개장터는 화개면 탑리에 있으며 5일장이 활발하게 이루어졌던 곳이다. 지리산 맑은 물이 흘러 내려와서 섬진강과 만나는 곳에 자리한 화개, 경상남도와 전라남도를 이어주는 화개장터는 해방전까지만 해도 우리나라 5대 시장중 하나로 전국의 어느 시장보다 많은 사람이 붐볐던 곳이다. 이곳엔 5일장이 섰으며, 지리산 화전민들은 고사리, 더덕, 감자 등을 가지고 와서 팔고, 전라도 구례, 경남 함양 등 내륙지방 사람들은 쌀보리를 가져와 팔았다. 그리고 전국을 떠돌던 보부상들도 이 장을 놓칠세라 생활용품을 가지고 왔으며, 또한 여수, 광양, 남해, 삼천포, 충무, 거제 등지의 사람들은 뱃길을 이용하여 미역, 청각, 고등어 등 수산물을 가득 싣고 와 이 화개장터에서 팔았다.

김동리 소설 [역마]의 무대이기도 한 화개장터는 벚꽃 길 따라 수많은 관광객이 지리산 쌍계사와 더불어 왕래하고 있으며, 화개장터에서 쌍계사까지 이어지는 도로변은 봄날이면 환상적인 벚꽃터널을 이룬다.
옛날 시골장터의 정취를 물씬 느낄 수 있는 화개장터에는 국밥집, 도토리묵, 재첩국집, 주막, 엿장수, 산나물,녹차 등의 특산품 등이 있으며 특히 우리 전통의 모습을 그대로 간직하고 있는 대장간이 있어 호미, 낫등 전통 농기구와 주방용 칼등을 즉석에서 구매할 수 있으며 훈훈한 인심을 주고받는 만남과 화합의 명소로 자리매김하고 있다.

Hwagae Marketplace is located in Tap-ri, Hwagae-myeon, where the 5-day market was actively conducted. Hwagae Market, which is located at the place where the clear water of Mt. Jiris flows down and meets the Seomjin River, and Hwagae Market, which connects Gyeongsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do, was one of Korea's five major markets until the liberation war and was crowded with more people than any other market in the country. The five-day market stood here, and the people of Hwajeon in Jirisan brought and sold bracken, deodeok, and potatoes, and people in inland regions such as Gurye, Jeolla-do and Hamyang, Gyeongnam brought and sold rice barley. In addition, bobu merchants who traveled all over the country would miss this chapter, so they brought household goods. Also, people from Yeosu, Gwangyang, Namhae, Samcheonpo, Chungmu, and Geoje used the boat road to load seafood such as seaweed, hearing, and mackerel. Sold at Hwagae Market.

The Hwagae Marketplace, which is also the stage of Kim Dong-ri's novel [Yeokma], is visited by many tourists along the cherry blossom path along with Jirisan Ssanggyesa Temple, and the road from Hwagae Marketplace to Ssanggyesa Temple forms a fantastic cherry blossom tunnel in spring.
In the Hwagae Marketplace, where you can feel the atmosphere of an old rural marketplace, there are special products such as soup restaurant, acorn cake, jaecheopgukjip, tavern, soybean paste, wild vegetables, and green tea. Traditional farming tools and kitchen knives can be purchased on the spot, and it has established itself as a place of meeting and harmony through which warm hearts are exchanged.
