Back in the summer of ’23, affable Los Angeles rhymer 310babii dropped a video for “soak city (do it).” The viral hit is a typical hip-hop fever dream: a pool party in the hills replete with scantily clad women and fresh-out-the-box white Air Forces. The twist is that it IS a dream, one he’s had after dozing off in class. The Gen-Z'er awakes face-to-face with a teacher (who’s played by fellow Inglewood artist D Smoke, in a cameo that feels like a co-sign) and is promptly given a lecture about what it takes to achieve your goals. Months removed from its premiere, “soak city (do it)” now feels like a prophecy. It's passed 100 million Spotify streams, rubbed elbows with Billboard Hot 100 stars, and been bumped by LeBron James and CJ Stroud, La Flame himself Travis Scott, and popular streamer Kai Cenat. To follow up his “lottery pick” debut, the hottest baby iteration on the scene since Lil and Da continues with the sports metaphors. You’ve got to be pretty plugged in to the Association to get the reference on which “paul pierce” is built. But the line “I’m just doing what I love/Trying to make my family proud” speaks for itself. Keep dreaming those dreams.
