DON'T BUY THE WRONG PAINT BRUSH...Use These Pro Tips To Decide!! (How To Choose Paint Brushes Pt.1)

There are numerous paint brushes available on the market today. And not every brush is meant for every application. This short video from The Honest Carpenter and Oak City Coatings will show you how to "read" the bristles and filaments of your paint brush!

Paint brush bristles or filaments fall into two distinct categories: SYNTHETIC vs. NATURAL.

Synthetic bristle brushes are best for water-based paints like latex, and also acrylic paints.

Natural bristle brushes are best for oil-based paints, as well as varnishes, lacquer, polyurethane, etc...

Synthetic brushes mostly utilize polyester and nylon for their bristles. Polyester is stiffer, and Nylon is softer. By blending the two types of bristles, brush manufacturers can achieve different levels of stiffness in their paint brushes.

Soft brushes are best for trim paints, especially interior, because they leave fewer stroke lines.

Stiff brushes are best for heavy paints and exterior applications, because summer heat can cause brushes to soften, which affects their performance.

Chinex is a brush material created to perform well with new LOW-V.O.C. PAINTS. Some brushes, like Purdy Pro-Extra, contain some Chinex in their bristle mixture.

Natural bristle brushes are actually made from organic animal hair (hogs, horses, oxen, badgers). These natural bristles have a trifurcation at their ends--they have split ends. These split filaments are great for holding and spreading oil-based paints, varnish, polyurethane and such.

To check the ratio of filaments in a brush, fan the tip with the end of your hand. Stiff polyester strands will be shorter, while soft nylon will be longer. Cheaper brush manufacturers will often pack their brushes with polyester solely!
