IT Forum October 7, 2022: Byron Knoll

Abstract

I will be discussing the current state of the art approaches for lossless text compression, at the extreme end of maximizing compression at the cost of high resource usage. I will discuss the Hutter Prize and the architecture of the following compression programs: cmix, starlit, nncp, and tensorflow-compress.

Bio

In 2011 I received my masters degree in computer science from the University of British Columbia. My supervisor was Nando de Freitas. My thesis was related to machine learning and data compression. Since then I have been working at the search ranking team at Google. Outside of work I continue to experiment with data compression as a hobby.
