Battered child syndrome is a clinical condition that describes the injuries a child sustains from repeated physical abuse or mistreatment. It can also include psychological abuse or neglect.

The term was coined by pediatrician C. Henry Kempe in 1962, when he published an article on the subject in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
